Sunshine

was born and raised in the Houston area and discovered her love for music at an early age, beginning to sing at just five years old. Her middle name, “Sunshine,” given by her mother, became a fitting moniker. While attending Summer Creek High School in Humble, Texas, Sunshine emerged as a standout vocalist, eventually serving as president of the school’s choir and mentoring fellow students.

Sunshine’s breakthrough came during her senior year in 2022. She won First Place in the Houston Rodeo’s Rodeo Rockstar contest (Senior Division) with a powerful performance of Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart,” earning a cash prize, a professional studio recording session, and a performance opportunity in the Houston Downtown Parade. Later that year, she was surprised live on camera by ABC13 with an American Idol Silver Ticket, an exclusive honor that allowed her to bypass open auditions and advance directly to a private audition with producers. In early 2023, Sunshine went on to audition for American Idol Season 21, representing her hometown on a national stage.

After graduating high school in 2023, Sofia moved to Boston to attend Berklee College of Music, where she is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Music degree. At Berklee, she continues to grow both onstage and behind the scenes, embracing new genres, collaborating with diverse ensembles, and forming her own backing group, The Sunshine Band. Often describing herself as a “Latina soul singer,” Sofia blends Latin and soul influences with a rich, expressive vocal style. Alongside voice training, she has expanded her skills in songwriting, music production, and live audio engineering. She has worked as a studio assistant at Cybersound Recording Studios and earned a competitive internship with Shore Fire Media, gaining firsthand experience in both recording and the business side of music.

Now in 2025, Sofia Sunshine Plata balances her studies with a growing professional career, regularly performing at Berklee and venues around Boston while continuing to write, produce, and create. Her journey reflects not only natural talent, but resilience and commitment to growth. As Sunshine puts it, “It’s a scary thing to reach for big dreams, but nothing is impossible.” With her vocal power, creative versatility, technical skillset, and magnetic presence, she is just getting started.
